My bathroom basin drains through the trap, then into a pipe in the wall, and then into a lead 1-1/2″ pipe that connects to the soil line. At that joint, where the lead meets cast iron, is where the leak exists. Should I simply apply heat to the bulbous fitting at that joint until the leak seals itself or is it more complicated than that ?
The home was built in 1900, but has been totally remodled - except the basement. It has new plumbing, roof, siding, wiring, bathroom, kitchen, floors, everthing. Because it’s so old, I wanted to check for lead, but it’s turning out to be a big pain in the butt. I can’t find anyone who checks for lead, and it sounds like it’s going to be very expensive when I do. If there’s no flakey paint or dusty atmospheres, and my kids won’t be in the basement, do I really need the lead test?
old newspaper(s) ink. When I was young I used to be a paperboy. After a few years the paperbag (sack) got so messy with news ink that it was rubbing against my hip and leg. Soon I delveoped rashes. turned out it was the lead in the older newspaper ink.
There maybe still a lot of printed materials out there with lead based ink in them.
Yes, but the water must be static. Be very careful with incoming mains water coz if the ice plug ‘goes’ once you’ve cut the pipe you’re in deep water (excuse the pun)
I can make out the word “Otto” can’t read last name. It is a pump up type with a removable ladle. Base is approx. 10 ” Found it in the attic of an old shed on a lot I bought. Would like to know more about it.
What makes both these metals suitable for this use? What makes lead unsuitable?
Home Depot sells a rubber sleeve for that very thing. It forms a flexible transition between the two materials and has a band clamp at either end to make it watertight.
Yes, someone does. Not me, but I took my XRF (x-ray fluoresence lead-based paint testing machine) recurrent training last month from a PhD who runs a non-profit to test homes or maybe he just donates time and efforts on low-income cases. Dr James Tucker. I think this is his private firm:http://www.asapenvironmental.com/
It has some good info on it and someone there could direct you to the non-profit work.

My daughter tested for high lead levels. We tested our water and the lead is extremely high. 5 times the legal limit. We believe it may be lead piping coming into our house. THis did not show up at our home inspection 2 years ago, I’m not sure why. We need to fix the problem, but know it will be costly and we don’t have much. Is it possible to get a grant from the state of PA to help us remove it.
