Is This Common Practise In America And If So, Where Are My Rights As A Tenant…?
As alot of you probably already know, my husband and I live in an apartment. I just got a notice saying that the Landlord (or his lacky’s) will be conducting an inspection on all the apartments in the next coming week, regardless of whether we are home or not.
It states, “If you’re not home, we’ll just let ourselves in and there’s no exceptions.”
We are paying tenants and I think this is an outrage! In Australia, we have more rights…if they come by and it’s not convenient for you, they simply have to come back when it is. The rules are totally different here and I’m wondering if this is common practise, or if they’re just taking it upon themselves and making up their own rules……any feedback on this will be appreciated.

The landlord is usually entitled to do whatever he wants.
The laws vary by state, but in the US landlords generally have broad leeway to do as they please unfortunately.
This is because some tenants will trash apartments and leave in the midst of the night with the landlord left to clean up the mess. Sad by true.
Just let the ferret out, the buggers won’t be coming back when you are not around.

In America, and especially in Texas, we have a tenant rule for anyone who enters your house without permission that says “I shoot first then let God sort ‘em out later”. If you put this down on the notice and return it to your landlord and/or lackys as a response, they’ll come by when it’s convenient for you.
I think all they need to do in most cases is to give you a 24 hour notice unless it’s an emergency. Since you were told that it would be during the week, this is technically adequate notice, *but* I agree that it is an unfair imposition on you & it would be better if each tenant had some sort of time window so you could plan to be there if that makes you more comfortable.
When I lived in apartments, there was often some sort of annual inspection to see if anything needed repair etc. Also, this is often done if the property is on the market (which the tennants won’t necessarilly know about). I’ve usually had pets & was always concerned that someone would let the cat out or something.
