State laws may vary, but sellers generally only have to disclose known defects. If the furnace was 40 years old, but it still worked, it was not a defect and there is probably no requirement to disclose it.
If you find items that were obvious defects and were not disclosed, then you may have legal recourse. You’ll need to hire a lawyer to determine that.
Next time, hire an inspector. It can save you a lot of time, grief, and money. I’m in the process of building a new house and I will have a qualified inspector check everything out. It’s a lot easier to do it now than find out about a serious defect a week after the builder’s warranty expires.
