Our Water Heater Makes Some Really Loud Thumping Sounds After The Hot Water Has Run?
What could this be, and should we have it checked? It’s always made noise after we use any hot water (it’s been a couple years I think) but it seems like it’s getting louder. Any thoughts on what it could be? It’s a loud thumping, kinda like the sound a washer makes when unbalanced.

Assuming that it’s not pipes hammering, it is most likely caused by a build-up of calcium and other minerals in the bottom of the tank. If the water heater is never drained, stuff collects, and when it is heating up (from underneath), it will make noises much like a pan of water when it starts to boil. Depending on it’s age, it may be too late to start draining it now, but it couldn’t hurt to do some research (call a plumber, check the manufacturers website). I would not pay someone to check it before knowing it’s age and weighing cost to replace versus cost to have a plumber come out. Water heaters are usually not prohibitive to replace, and if it’s 10 + years old it may be time.
