Plumbing Problems…my Toliet Upstairs Has Not Flushed Right For A Few Years, My House Was Built In The 70’s.
I was downstair the other day and smelled something nasty…..opened the shower door ( we never use that one) and it smelled like sewer and looked like something had backed up in it…..but it drained ok and so did the toliet down there. Yesterday was downstairs it all of a sudden it was like someone flushed the toliet ( the washer was going) when I went to check it was like the toliet had exploded water all over…..not a lot but up on the seat and stuff……..should I call a plumber? I don’t want something really bad to happen…..Thanks

You have a partial clog in you main line. Generally the shower line is indirectly connected to the toilet line. so if you have a backup it generally comes up in your shower because its lower. a partial clog will slowly let water seep by so after awhile the water will subside and it will drain ok. but when you start using alot of water like a washing machine it will cause problems. Get a plumber to snake the line and should be fine.hope this helps
You either have a major clog or a drain ventilation problem. Call a plumber
Plumbers charge outrageous prices. If you call a plumber be sure and ask their hourly rate and if that rate is for one or two plumbers. Alot of times they will say for example $38 a hour & that’s all you plan on paying but then you see two guys get out of the truck and it’s actually $72 a hour. Also be sure to ask about riding time…alot of times they will charge you for that also.
That being said if you are relatively handy you can rent a sewer auger from a hardware store or a rent a tool place and snake it out yourself. I would rent one with 100 foot of cable as alot of times 50 foot just isn’t enough. We have 110 year old oak tree in front of our house who’s roots run amouck lol and i snake out our entire sewer system twice a year.
