Hot Water Heater Indoors In ’70’s. Can It Be Replaced Indoors, Or Does It Have To Go Outside?
I was told that it’s illegal to ‘re-install’ a hot water heater inside a house and that it must be relocated to an outside closet or garage. Is this true?

If it is electric you san reinstall it with no worry. If its gas, you need to put it in a well vented area,a louver door on a closet will allow it to recieve the oxygen it needs. also be sure the flu is clear and in good condition. . I cant even dream of it being illegal to put it inside the house. Best thing is to check with your local building codes, and insurance company, better safe than sorry.
Where do you live? If you are in a warm enough climate it can be installed in an outdoor closet, but I never heard of a law that says it has to be. I live in Chicago and around here every water heater is installed inside because it gets so damn cold in the winter, there would be freezing problems if installed outside. Check with your local codes to see what is permitted.
