What The Hell Was I Thinking When I Got Into Journalism?
after 35 years i have concluded that it is all about the owners and all my idealism was and youth was misspent at relatively low pay. i look at the talking heads on tv “news” and become enraged. if only i had learned a good trade like plumbing or electrical work, i think i would be much happier and better off. no, i am sure i would be better off. higher education is a waste for the vast majority. so pizzed.

I guess that education is on an idealistic level while the world of work is strictly commercial, in the case of journalism it is show business. Being newsworthy has little to do with what gets published so to stay in work journalists are pressured to sensationalise and pursue what appeals to the readers base instincts.
All of society seems to be run at 2 levels, one is the level of public awareness and that is a fantacy. People are encouraged to marry for romantic reasons when the real reason is avoiding people becomming a burden on the state. People are encouraged to take pension schemes when the real reason is to avoid the country having to provide for the aged.
People are encouraged into being doctors to help the sick and needy but the real reason is that medicine is big business which makes a lot of money. People are encouraged to learn journalism to pursue and publish the truth when in fact news publishing and broadcasting is again all about making money by allowing people to live their lives by proxy on the tragedies of others rather than being aware of how boring and controlled their lives really are.
The solution is for educators to be honest with pupils and students about their career options from the start but sadly people only discover the truth by the time they are already in too deep to start again and by that time the system is already on the way to having brainwashed them into believing in what they do. By then the mortgage, car payments and the need to put the new baby through the same process has taken over as the priority in life and idealism is but a distant memory of ones youth and innocence (nievety).
You were thinking that you would do some good in the world, and if you look back carefully, you will find that you did.
So, it took you 35 years to work it out - you’re bright aren’t you. Have you thought of a career in journalism?
I’m thinking the same thing, luckily for me I’m only in first year at uni. It’s not too late to learn a trade though, you’re never too old to start again.
