We Have A Leak Under Kitchen Sink. Also Cold Water Slow To Turn On.?
We bought our house about a year ago. About a month ago, we noticed a very small leak from somewhere underneat the kitchen. The water is clear, the pipes look fine. About the same time, we’ve noticed that whenever we turn our cold water on, there is a “glunk” sound, then the water comes out, like it is delayed. We are young, first time homeowners without a clue on plumbing. Please Help!

You’ll have to trace your leak. First, make sure to clean out under the sink, then dry it out completely. Next, run the sink about an inch full with the stopper in. Check for dampness under the sink itself. Use a flashlight and make sure you look at the back where the water faucets are. If it’s there, you may just need to tighten your connections, or you may need to take them apart and reseal them. If you do, remember to turn off the water first. If no water appears tit’s time to check the drain. First look at the sink bottom to make sure there are no cracks and no leaks at the first connection, then let the water out of your sink and check for dampness at each joint in the drain pipe. If you find any, the joint above the dampness needs to be replaced or resealed. Last, with a rag, cloth, or paper towel, check the pipes for week spots which feel like they can be pushed in. If you find one, that will definitely need to be replaced. To reseal a joint, take it apart and wipe it dry. Use pipe sealer on the threads and reassemble it. You want to do this if you replace a pipe or connector too. If you have a local hardware store, there will probably be several people there who can help you find what you need to repair the problem. Take your parts in if you don’t know how to measure them–it saves time and money. Depending on the problem and the date of your plumbing, you may be able to get replacement parts, or you may have to buy new. Hope this helps and enjoy your home. Most of the items will cost just a few dollars, but don’t try to save too much or you’ll be doing this againin a year or two. You’ll probably need a pipe wrench and a crescent wrench for any of these repairs.
