What Type Of Pipe Is Used For A Houses Drain System?
I am talking about the plumbing for my sink, shower, and toilet drain. Right now I have a heavy iron but I might need to replace it. What is mainly used? PVC? What is good to use?

Your answer depends on where you live. I have built homes in Colorado, Idaho and California. Some states, like Idaho and Colorado, permit the use of PVC while others, like California, require ABS.
Personally, I prefer PVC. While ABS allows you more time for fitting adjustment, it is much more toxic than PVC when burning.
The final call of course is with your local building department. And it is not a DYI job, consult a licensed plumber.
I just read the last three answers and noticed that all recommended PVC pipe for use in waste systems. This surprised me because I live in California and have never seen anyone use PVC for anything other than water supply systems. What we use here for drain systems is ABS. It, like PVC, is plastic, cheap, and light weight (compared to the old cast iron).
I suggest that you consult with your local inspector and find out what the code calls for.
In Oregon ABS is used for drains, PVC is really only used for irrigation systems.
Definitely call your local building department, or your plumbing supply store.
you need to use schedule 35 pvc 4 inch if this is the drain pipe that goes out side to the sewer.
PVC is commonly used today
PVC is all that’s used in today’s homes. It is easy, installs quickly and it is a good price.
Hello—
many use PVC but check the local health folks requirements
