Magnetic signs and, better, a vinyl wrap for your vehicle. They aren’t very expensive, in the long run, and it turns your vehicle into a mobile billboard. Every time you’re in traffic, someone will read it (best if you have something on the back of your vehicle-short & sweet), whenever you park your vehicle, people see it.
Now here’s the trick, park your vehicle where you want to get business! In busy parking lots, by the entrance/exit or intersection. In or around the neighborhood you want to work in or the office/commercial area, so it appears you already have business there!

Word of mouth is the cheapest and most effective advertising. Network with businesses and don’t be afraid to ask customers to spread the word if they like your service. Attach business cards to work invoices, and develop relationships with customers. Perhapse you can keep a client list in a spreadsheet and send a couple greeting cards one or two times a year wishing them happy holidays, but don’t push your service, just remind them that your there and humanize yourself.

You could buy small billboards (called poster boards) near the Home Depot/Lowe’s for those “We repair what your husband fixed” type of messages. You could also call on landlords–they have a lot of plumbing problems at the time, and you could get better results with fewer calls. Maybe even send baskets or another gift.
