Do You Completely Change Water In A Water Heater When It Is Black?
My dad wants to know,
When a water heater’s water is black, do you completely change the water?
Also, does it affect the amount of heat? The family renting the 1st floor of the house is complaining that there is not enough heat.

You should flush annually unless you have a water softener. I heard removing the anode rod will clear this up. If your anode rod has decayed and broken replacing the heater is the only way to fix the black. Water deposits diminish heaters ability to heat over time. Hard water greatly shortens heater life.
yes, drain it, there’s a spout on the bottom, hook a hose up to it & drain it, (unplugged first of course), then fill it back up, if its still discolored, repeat, your trying to get alot of backed up sediment in the bottom of the tank. if still not enuf hot, check your temperature setting on the side panel and check the heaters (should have two of them if your on a 40 gallon tank) the bottom one is likely rusted out.
Replace the water heater but it sounds like the black is in the pipes i bet there old galvanized chech the line
