I Have A Water Leak In The Hot Water Tub Handle Of A Faucet That Is 40 Years Old. ?
I am used to taking off a cap of the front of the handle to access a screw, so you can take apart the handle and replace washers, o-rings or whatever. There is no way to get this handle apart. The center of the handle has a small hole that looks like an allen wrench could fit into. I tried a allen wrench and nothing catches inside the handle to loosen. Any ideas how to remove or repair these old florida tub faucets.

First turn the water supply off. Maybe you need a different size of allen wrench or a star shaped?
I just read it in a my Handyman mag a couple months ago. Its an issue, I agree. I’d have to have those instructions in front of me and I can’t seem to find that issue. Lowe’s has a whole stack of mag when you come in the front door. Try those.
Are you sure that you have everything out of the valve? Old American Standard valves use “top hats” that just press on the end. Peek inside and see if there is more in the valve. Do you know the brand?
It may be a STAR screw but, I had this problem not long ago, had to cut the pipe and replace everything, no one had replacement parts, good luck
It may need a STAR shaped tool not really sure exactly what they are called? You may also need to clean it with a lime remover or mild acid cleaner to clean out the center for the tool to fit properly
